At the beginning of the 19th century, with the arrival of the freed slaves from Philadelphia and then the immigration of neighboring Antilleans, this area, located in the geographical center of the Samaná Peninsula, became a mosaic of cultures, giving the region variety and its own personality. Surnames such as King, Jones, Green, Kelly... among others, are very common among the families that inhabit the area.

Although the most beautiful beaches exist in the outskirts of El Limón, solitary and wild (Morón with its sunken cannon in the sand, Limón, Las Canas, El Ermitaño…) this small town, which is beginning to flourish with family based industry in eco-tourism, is known for its famous waterfall that attracts thousands of visitors from all over the country.

El Salto de El Limón, located in one of the three main hills that compose the Samaná Sierra, in the northern part of the peninsula, with its height of 130 ft. (40 meters) and moss covered walls, possesses great natural beauty and is one of the key excursions of the Samaná Peninsula. During the 40 minute journey on horse, you’ll have the opportunity to observe small family orchards, cascada limon cultivations of cocoa, coffee, pineapple, coconut palms, abundant tropical fruit-bearing trees like the guanábana, mango, bija, sweet and sour oranges, grapefruits or the “buen pan” (good bread), a fruit which is an ingredient of various traditional dishes of the area. The landscape will show many small colorful dwellings built with wood from the Royal Palm (Roystonea hispaniolana), very protected by the authorities. This palm also serves as home and nesting place to the cigua palmera (Dulcus dominicus), indigenous bird of the island.

Although the primitive-original vegetation has already disappeared, there are still some remnants of the sub-tropical humid forest in the banks of the streams and in the pedestrian trails to the waterfall, in addition to the coconut palms and cultivated tropical plants. Among the native and indigenous trees are, for example: Juan Primero (Simarouba grey-green), Cigua Blanca (Ocotea coriacea), Uva de Sierra (Coccoloba diversifolia), Cabirma (Guarea guidonia) or the Higüero (Crescentia cujete), whose dry fruit was used by the natives as water containers, and currently is used to make pieces of craftsmanship that are very popular.

To get to the area one must take the Santa Bárbara de Samaná - El Limón - Las Terrenas highway.
