Tropical Rivers
More than an excursion is an ecologic adventure, dynamic and nice, in a wild environment for nature lovers.
It starts in the seaport of Sánchez, La Malvina, around the 9:30 a.m. and returns at 5:00 p.m. After 45 minutes of navigation, crossing all the Samaná Bay, you’ll arrive to the estuary of the Barracote River where you will be able to see a multitude of birds that rest on the trunks thrown by the river and observe the most important forest of mangrove swamp of the region (red mangrove, black, white mangrove or botoncillo).
Mending their course, in the middle of a virgin forest of aquatic and tropical plants, we will arrive to the small village of Laguna Cristal (crystal lagoon) where you will be able to bathe in its turquoise and crystalline waters (a true charm). This small town is mainly dedicated to the agriculture, and seems to live out of time. In the rainy season, flooding is frequent.
The Yuna River, the second most important of the country, starts in the Central Mountain Range, feeds off other eight important rivers before flowing into in the Samaná Bay, after traveling 140 miles (220 kilometers). Its estuary, feeds, along with the Barracote, a great coastal lagoon, formerly known as the Gran Estero (Great Estuary), at present known as National Park of Mangrove Swamps of the Lower Yuna, with 42 square miles (110 km).
In the crossing of the two rivers there is a small unevenness while getting out of the boat, caused by a dike, but with little physical effort, you’ll be able to cross to the other side. Everyone has to participate. We will descend the Yuna among rice fields, disturbed only by the song of the birds.
On the way we’ll see peasants crossing the river on small artisan bridges made of wood and rope, and will observe scenes of their daily rural life that will be hard to forget. There’s a half an hour stop for refreshments in the village of La Jagua, very animated on weekends. Then we’ll return to Sánchez.
A very pleasant excursion, different and close to nature. Not recommended for people with physical problems or for small children.
