The Samaná Peninsula is located in the northeastern extreme of the Dominican Republic, between the Samaná Bay and the Escocesa Bay. It extends from west to east for about 35 miles (58 km) with a minimum width of 4.5 miles (7.5 km) from Sánchez to the north and a maximum of 11.5 miles (18.5 km) from Los Cacaos in the south to Las Tres Puntas in the north.

Its notoriety goes back to the arrival of Christopher Columbus, to whom the Ciguayo Indians, old inhabitants of the island, received with a shower of arrows. For this reason, part of the bay is called el Golfo de las Flechas (Gulf of the Arrows).

The Samaná Peninsula has always attracted visitors, not just because of its beautiful beaches of golden sand, with shores shaded by thousands of coconut palms (it has the largest quantity of coconut palm trees by square meter in the world), but by its strategic position in the Caribbean geography. The French incursions, alternating with the intrusion of theLa Ballena English buccaneers, were very frequent. In the 19th century, the followers of Napoleon wanted to build in Samaná a Napoleonic city, and even the United States offered to buy it for a million pesos.

The peninsula is one of the oldest lands of the island, emerging from the bottom of the sea some 500 million years ago. Attesting to this long history are the deposits of hulla or coal in the municipality of Sánchez and the vast reserve of portoro marble, a type of marble that only be found in Italy and the Dominican Republic in Samaná.
